Driftless Glen Single Barrel Wheated

Nose: Powdered sugar donuts, vanilla, butterscotch. A very pleasant aroma. No detectable ethanol, very inviting. Palate: Initially, pecan praline, honey, and subtle butterscotch, followed by some bitter pecan shell and hot honey. No ethanol burn, but there's a strange bready/yeasty note in the background. Finish: After the sweetness fades, there's some bright oak, Rice Chex cereal, and a tannic aftertaste. Given the extremely high wheat content in the mash bill, the bready/cereal notes are not surprising, but the thin body is. Overall: A very distinct bourbon, not a bad one, but it seems unbalanced. At over 5 years old, I'd anticipate a slightly fuller body and some richer notes to complement the stark contrast between the sweet donut aroma and the dry cereal finish. I'm looking forward to their future releases!

Around six weeks after the initial pour, this expression truly revealed itself. It's slightly less intense than their SB bourbon, with a softer, more rounded taste and flavor profile. Mild pralines are noticeable, and baking spices come through nicely. It lacks the banana or peanut notes found in some major industry offerings (this isn't a criticism, just a distinction). The 100 proof makes this exceptionally easy to drink. The finish leaves the tongue slightly parched, inviting another sip.

A harmonious blend of sweet and savory elements, enhanced by the distinct character of new oak barrels. This bourbon deviates from the typical smooth profile, offering a distinctive and captivating flavor journey. Though its mouthfeel might be somewhat limited, the taste is certainly worth exploring.

Quite sweet, with caramel corn upfront. Not very complex, but enjoyable.
