About this bottle

This Detroit-produced rye features a mash bill of 97% Michigan-grown rye and 3% specialty malted barley. It is crafted on a small copper pot-still within an old slaughterhouse in Eastern Market, using organic rye cultivated in Eaton County, Michigan. Production occurs in small batches, typically consisting of 5-6 barrels, and the spirit is aged in charred American white oak barrels.

Lorelei Henderson 1.5

Less grainy than I anticipated given the mash bill. It has a full body, but the finish has a turpentine-like quality, likely due to its youth. It's reminiscent of other local Midwestern distilleries like Koval and Few. In summary, there are better ryes available for the price.

Bryon Milam 5.0

This is an excellent rye. It's spicy, as expected with a 97% rye mash bill, and I detect notes of caramel and butter on the palate. It's quite smooth for its proof and definitely enjoyable for sipping.

Kenny Ambriz 3.8

Late notes. Quick thoughts: It's quite sweet with some bubblegum notes. A whisper of spearmint. Once again, I'm impressed for a young craft whiskey, though slightly less so than with the bourbon.

Nehemiah Luu 2.8

A little harsh, but some enjoyable flavors are present, primarily vanilla, cherry, and oak.

Jeff Leahy 3.5

It's a bit too bitter considering the expected notes, so it's better on the rocks than neat.

Marc Smart 4.3

Quite mild initially, followed by a pleasant warm spice. Rather enjoyable and good served neat.
