Bottled in 2017. Deanston, the forward-thinking Glenfarclas, produces excellent whiskies at fair prices. A cask strength 20-year-old, exclusively Oloroso matured whisky bottled at 55.5% for less than $200? Provide another instance. Not even Glenfarclas – if they released this bottling, it would be part of their renowned Family Cask series, commanding many hundreds to thousands of dollars on the secondary market. Similar to many sherry-influenced Glenfarclas bottlings, this Deanston likely uses casks that have held spirits multiple times before. Consequently, while this bottling doesn't possess the deep, intense sherry character of Glendronach, it still demonstrates skill. This Deanston 20-year-old has come closer to tasting like Werther’s Original than any whisky ever. Soft, creamy caramel. A touch of raisin; slightly musty. Hazelnuts. Yogurt with dried cranberries and blackberries. Nougat. It aims for a rich, coating mouthfeel but doesn't stick to your teeth. Hazelnut coffee and wood spices are present in the finish. Overall, this whisky shows a sense of modesty. It's not the sherry powerhouse found in expensive Glendronachs or Macallans, but it's a well-balanced, well-structured, and enjoyable example of quality Oloroso maturation, showcasing earthiness, nuttiness, and dark dried fruits. Werther’s Original, in this context, is an emergent characteristic. Score: * (unforgettably good) Bottle cost: $150-200 Perceived bottle worth: $185
