About this bottle

Origin Spirits produces Currach Single Malt Atlantic Kombu Seaweed Cask. This triple-distilled single malt initially matures in ex-bourbon barrels. For the final three months, it is finished in virgin oak barrels containing charred Atlantic kombu seaweed. Currach, a traditional Irish boat type crafted from wicker, tar, and animal skins, remains in use today for seaweed harvesting in Ireland.

I was thrilled to see this on display, thinking it was exactly what I’d like, and bought it immediately. This turned out to be my first regrettable spirit acquisition of 2023. It possesses no flavor yet tastes awful simultaneously – an incredible accomplishment. I’ll keep it as a curiosity for visitors to sample; I’d gladly give it away to anyone who enjoys it, but it will likely end up poured out. It’s like lukewarm water with a hint of pond scum.

Aroma of port (interestingly) and a bit of vanilla; not much flavor – some oak, malt, and a whisper of vanilla; a little warmth, medium texture; the finish is dusty and slightly oaky; no salt or brine as I had hoped given the cool concept; truly just a lack of flavor overall.

Tamra Dao

A briny essence arrives before you taste and lingers well beyond.

Jay Nieto 3.0

A little rough, strong spirit that hits you, saline,
