Sherry Butt 5229 - 52.2% ABV Nose: Ripe apples with hints of dried red berries, faint milk chocolate, and orange zest. With water, candied ginger appears, and the chocolate notes become more vibrant. Taste: Ripe apples, dark honey, dark raisins, dried red currants, honey, dried apple rings, orange zest, and candied ginger heat, with cocoa nibs. With water, everything lightens up; there are fewer dried fruits and more candied ginger, honey, and fresh apple with raisins. Finish: Lingering notes of dark chocolate/cocoa nib bitterness, apples, ginger spice, and orange zest, with a bit too much pith. With water, it's less sweet, tasting like bland apple, cocoa nibs, ginger, and orange pith. Score: 88/100 Final Thoughts: This was quite tasty and seemed to have been aged in a well-used and inactive cask, as it only had gentle sherry notes and retained more classic apple and honey characteristics. I found it better without water, as water seemed to mute the flavors considerably and somewhat spoiled the finish.
