Conniption American Dry Gin

Before I start the review, I want to thank a friend for suggesting this gin to me. Over the past year, in my small way, I've been making an effort to support local businesses during the challenges of the pandemic, including local/small distilleries. When I travel now, I try to connect with people in the area and seek recommendations for local spirits that I can't find in coastal South Carolina, then I try one or two. With that said, let's get to the review. As you can see from the rating, I really enjoy this gin. The nose on this clear liquid is vibrant with amazing scents. Juniper is detectable but not overpowering, along with cardamom (I actually went to my spice rack and opened coriander and cardamom to smell them alongside the gin). This gin also has numerous citrus notes. The body is predominantly citrus and ethanol. However, for 88 proof, it's quite smooth to sip. There are several flavors I still can't identify, but they are quite pleasant and really balance the gin. The finish is very nice and long for a gin. Those who prefer the peppery finish found in Beefeater and Tanqueray might be disappointed with this gin. As for cocktails, this is a unique spirit. The drinks I've made with it have ranged from absolutely fantastic to disastrous. A Martini made with this gin is one of the best I've ever had using Noilly Prat Extra Dry vermouth; all the flavors complement each other perfectly. The same goes for a Vesper using Cocchi Americano and Reyka vodka; the citrus notes work so well together, creating an amazing drink. With a Gin and Tonic, it's a mixed bag: good with regular tonic and perhaps a squeeze of lime, but almost offensive with Indian River Elderflower or Mediterranean tonic water. Also, it doesn't work very well in an Aviation cocktail with Creme de Violette. To me, it tasted like a floral-flavored lemonade. So, overall, how is this gin? It's wonderful, and I will continue to purchase it when I visit North Carolina in the future. The listed price is quite high, as I acquired this bottle for $26 plus tax. This is a special gin, and I look forward to mixing other drinks with it. Conniption American Dry Gin should be in your collection if you enjoy gin. Enjoy.
