Compass Box Gold Standard

Another limited bespoke bottling from Compass Box, this one created for the Binny’s superstores in the Midwest. The aroma begins gentle and citrusy, typical of those Compass Box blends containing grain. It’s enjoyable and recognizable, but to my disappointment suggests it won’t differ much from the standard range. However, after some patience, a trace of Golden Syrup or caramelized sugar appears, possibly hinting at some sherry casks. The flavor mirrors this: malt and lemon with a subtle undertone of molasses. The conclusion is brief. The composition, which I didn't review until after tasting my sample, consists of Clynelish and Teaninich malt and Port Dundas grain, but also includes a blend from a “custom French oak cask” and, surprisingly, a couple of Islays. The Teaninich was aged in a sherry butt and might explain the sugary notes, although grain this old can also contribute that character. I detected nothing from the Islays – Caol Ila and a touch of Ardbeg. Nevertheless, it’s a delightful warm-weather choice that would complement a sunny day by a Midwest lake.
