Johnnie Walker Black Label: Director's Cut

Nose - Mild sweet peat, over-steeped black tea, clean sweetness from grain alcohol, a hint of cognac leather. Taste - Pleasant black & white pepper spice/tingle, a hint of dark fruity sherry-like Scotch, dark dried stone fruits, dark barrel-aged apple cider with oaky sweetness, a faint trace of fruity smoke, dark honey. Finish - Lingering white pepper tingle, light fruity smoke, sweet dark honey/dried fruit with sweetened black tea. Score - 85/100 Final Thoughts - This was quite enjoyable. I haven't personally tried Black Label very often, but from what I recall, this certainly has more flavor intensity. I believe it has a slightly fruitier component than the standard Black label, and the higher alcohol content also improves the mouthfeel. It feels more coating on the palate compared to the thin sensation of the standard Black. The fruitiness balances the smoke, making it a subtle background element, which is nice. Would I drink it if offered? - Yes Would I specifically order it? - Perhaps Would I buy a bottle? - No, not at the current price

Enjoying the JW Blade Runner Edition while viewing Blade Runner 2049. Observations: A rich, honey-colored spirit with a medium body and a smooth texture. Nose: Gentle and sweet – notes of toasted marshmallow, vanilla, a touch of sea salt, and a hint of fruit like raisins and dates. Mild smokiness is also present. Palate: Begins with fruity sweetness and a touch of marshmallow. The mid-palate develops complexity with layers of sweet tobacco smoke and a bit of warmth. The finish is extended, carrying the initial sweetness with smoky clouds that add depth and richness. This whisky is flavorful, intricate, and satisfying. A truly enjoyable blend, which I much prefer to its counterpart, the standard Johnnie Walker black label. The higher alcohol content and slightly altered composition create a more engaging spirit. My only regret is that it was a limited production.

I wish this were more affordable and accessible. It's a whiskey for special occasions, like watching Blade Runner 2049. It's like an amplified version of JW Black in every aspect: more heat, more peat, more sweetness, more salt, more malt. It makes me wish JW would consider increasing the ABV by 3%, like they do with Green, to achieve a profile this close to it. Although it's clearly a blend, it's still very enjoyable. I prefer it neat, but a single ice cube or a couple of drops of water can enhance its cohesion and enjoyment when returning to it neat.

This blend is quite distinct from the typical Johnnie offerings. I relished 2049 served over a large ice sphere in a Johnnie Walker rocks glass (incidentally, the glass perfectly cradles the sphere due to its inverted cone base). Warming some in my hands revealed a sweet, smoky character. I'm already tempted to pour another two fingers. The flavors were remarkably distinct, seeming to dance on my tongue. Each new taste brought a fresh sensation I'll note after finishing the bottle. At $65, this blend exceeded my expectations.

An exceptional blend, especially if you appreciate Caol Ila and Talisker; you'll undoubtedly enjoy this superb whiskey. As a side note, I've encountered numerous reviews claiming this highly limited edition isn't numbered, which is incorrect. Each bottle is indeed numbered on the back, and mine is #4322.

It starts with a rich essence of vanilla and spices, quickly mellowing into a smooth, peaty finish. A character would approve. Like a fleeting moment, it's gone, having been a limited release. A true pity. If you can find this special run inspired by Blade Runner 2049, give it a try. No special test required.
