Compass Box Ethereal

When Compass Box began in 2000, their inaugural bottling was "Eleuthera," meaning "free" in ancient Greek. This iconic expression was later discontinued and lost. However, circumstances allowed Compass Box to create a special tribute for La Maison Du Whisky's 65th Anniversary. This special bottling was named "Ethereal," signifying perfect beauty, so exquisite it's considered otherworldly, a common descriptor for the universe. Notably, Ethereal is an anagram for "Eleuthera," serving as a homage to their first blend, now existing only in memory. Bottled at 49% ABV, this is a blend of Old Pulteney, Ardbeg, Caol Ila, and Miltonduff. On the nose, it opens with a cigar box scent, roasted coffee, and burnt grass. Povidone and smoke are present, along with gooseberries. On the palate, it's reminiscent of a marshmallow that has landed in water. Ashtray notes are prominent. After the initial taste, a creaminess emerges, like meringue. A pleasant, thick sweetness is noticeable. The finish is very enjoyable. Notes of paper, ashtray, licorice, and ginger are present. Very refined. Overall, I find this blend to be a fine, elegant whisky, developed for a connoisseur like LMDW, with significant attention to detail. Its specific taste profile is intentional and well-executed. A commendable effort from Compass Box, earning a score of 89 out of 100.
