Sallie Alaniz 3.5

Smell: Oloroso notes dominate initially, with nuts, chocolate, and wine-like characteristics. Simultaneously, there's a significant presence of dill and mint, followed by pink peppermint candies. With water: The dill recedes, chocolate becomes more prominent, and a general sweetness emerges, including light prunes. Taste: Chocolate, nuts, and wine-like qualities appear first, similar to the aroma. Fruit is scarce. The dill is quite strong and clashes with the sweetness. With water: The dill and mint are significantly reduced, allowing more chocolate, cinnamon, nuts, leather, pepper, and prunes to come through. Finish: Peppermint and dill linger for a considerable time, followed by cinnamon, cloves, and a slightly dusty quality. The finish lacks sufficient sweetness to balance the dill. With water: Primarily chocolate, cinnamon, pepper, and oak with strong tannins. Mouthfeel: Medium body with a pronounced oiliness. With water: Significantly less oily. Overall: Similar to another expression, this one almost necessitates water for its full potential. While not typical for American-style whiskies, adding water works exceptionally well to temper the overpowering dill. It would have received a 3.00, but water elevates it by half a point.

Definitely the best Quebecois whisky I have tasted so far. In a blind tasting, it would be very easy to mistake it for a bourbon. It has flavors of cherry and nuts. The finish is rather short. It smells of fruit, like a bourbon! However, it is noticeably spicier, likely due to the high rye content! Not a great value for the price, but it's fun to finally see interesting products from here! Tasted at M-A Pinel in May 2022.

A great sherry aroma. Good peppery notes from the rye, along with some earthy, nutty, and chocolate flavors. Also a mix of tobacco. Complex and easy to drink.
