Chivas Regal has introduced several fine 18-year-old expressions for the travel retail market under the "The Wine Casks Series" label, the first of which was this Chateau Margaux. The name is derived from a Bordeaux Winery renowned for its premier grand cru red wine, primarily a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc grapes. Naturally, it's a very attractive 1-liter bottle, with a commendable 48% ABV, which is quite nice and interesting for a blend. On the nose, it is extremely floral, with notes of peaches, clove, and flowers, like a rose with thorns in its aroma. Red fruits, herbal notes, and perhaps smoke? Eucalyptus is present. It has a "hippie" feel. Nice. On the palate, it is very wine-like and dry, with red fruits and floral notes; red berries are abundant. The aftertaste is also very good, offering a dry mouthfeel, tobacco, red berries, and ginger. It actually has a slight smokiness. Beautiful. Overall, this is a fantastic everyday whisky. While many whisky connoisseurs might find it lacks complexity, it is so enjoyable that it's a dram suitable for sharing with friends and family at an important gathering. Nicely executed by Chivas. My score is 88 out of 100.
