Catoctin Creek Laphroaig Cask (Pearson's Wine and Spirits selection)

This is a limited run of 306 bottles, chosen by Pearson's Wine and Spirits in Washington, D.C. Catoctin Creek aged their 3-year-old, 92-proof rye for 6 months in a Laphroaig cask. Nose: Exhibits a familiar old-bookstore character found in Catoctin Creek, alongside typical rye notes of cinnamon, vanilla, and herbs. No discernible smoke. Palate: Initially presents as a rather young rye, but also has a buttery quality alongside cinnamon and black pepper flavors. The peat influence is quite subtle at first, building with subsequent sips. The Laphroaig Cask primarily enhances the robustness and complexity of the Catoctin Creek. Finish: The peat is most apparent here. The spice lingers, accompanied by a restrained yet distinct smoky note. Without prior knowledge of the peat-cask finishing, the taste might seem somewhat mysterious. As it is, it feels like unexpectedly meeting an old acquaintance. Overall: This is a commendable effort by Catoctin Creek, and I wish it were a permanent addition to their offerings. They removed the whiskey from the second barrel at the optimal time, avoiding an overpowering Laphroaig finish. The rye remains the star, with the Laphroaig accentuating the best qualities of the Catoctin Creek. I believe this would appeal to those who generally prefer rye and are seeking something a bit unique. The price is also reasonable for such a scarce whiskey.
