The aroma is full of leather, toffee, vanilla, and butterscotch. Faint hints of citrus and honey are also present. This one was a bit surprising as it drinks rather hot. The initial sip produced a considerable burn at the back of the throat. Allowing it to rest seemed to soften it, revealing notes of butterscotch, green apple, vanilla, and honey, along with significant spice. It's difficult to discern any influence from the sherry casks in the finish, but this review is based on the initial pour. It's velvety and full-bodied, yet it appears to have artificial coloring and tastes as though chemicals were added, perhaps some wine or sugar. A shame to spoil a commendable 18-year-old with a high proof. Take a cue from the U.S. approach to Straight and Bourbon whiskeys and make Canadian whiskies free of additives and coloring, if you would! Consumers interested in this type of spirit are fine with high-age, high-proof whiskeys having a pale hue or sticking to the genuine taste of the aged spirit. Keep the wine for your sangria, the caramel for your sweets, and out of whiskey!
Vanilla and caramel, orange, black cherry, and gingerbread and molasses, dark fruit, other dried fruit, and it lingers a long time on the tongue. Big sweetness and a boldness that calls for a drop of water.
