October 2024 - Harriet Rooftop - Toronto Clear amber color, resembling flowing maple syrup in this peculiar land. Nose is round, woody, rich, fruity, and honeyed.. quite intriguing. First taste is honeyed agave, with significant smoothness on the palate; this whisky is elegant, like a young Asian woman moving with fluid grace and poise, her supple body like a vine. Second taste reveals very slight woodiness and alcohol. It leaves a woody and round sensation in the mouth. A whisky of great quality, with ineffable smoothness... Lacks boldness, a whisky for a loving and generous woman. This whisky honors the trappers who mastered these vast, frozen, and harsh forests. Its languor echoes the steps of bear hunters, the solitude of forest rangers, the muffled white silence of snow covering all life to bring calm, introspection, and serenity to souls that have confronted themselves. In alcohol, solitude, cold, and snow lies an inherent truth that some peoples have grasped. What remains of the spirits of old that radiated power and wisdom? Around me, on this rooftop, only airheads and flashy guys in suits remain... Where are the heroes who traversed forests blindly, rifles loaded... Where are the men who knew how to live in the white silence of harsh winters? Only this whisky remains to honor their memory...

After nearly two weeks away, I can review another whisky. This is my second Canadian whisky, and having tried two, I can identify a characteristic of Canadian spirits: maple syrup. This "Premium extra" whisky, bottled at 40% ABV, is quite good, particularly the aroma. The color is tawny and very inviting. Nose: Very sweet, with notes of maple syrup, honey, prunes, and creme brulee. Palate: Sweet yet grassy, with pleasant oak notes, oranges, and a simultaneous sensation of toffee and tobacco, finishing with moderate spice. It has a light body; adding water brings out a fully honeyed aroma and the palate develops lemon-bitter notes with a tobacco finish. A decent, very sweet whisky.

Canadian Club 1858 is unremarkable. It's a fairly typical whisky, better suited for mixed drinks or highballs rather than sipping straight, though its affordability is a plus. The aroma is bland with hints of light barley. The taste is thin with a slight sweetness. I detect some wheat and a bit of spice. The aftertaste is brief and slightly warm. Considering the price, I find it acceptable. It won't astound you, but it does its job in a highball. I'd rate it closer to a 1.5/2 neat, but I'm increasing that score due to its value.
