Calumet Farm 8 Year Bourbon (Discontinued)

The aroma is subtle, but I detected notes of caramel, cherry, and oak. It goes down very smoothly, which is a positive aspect. However, the palate was quite unexpected. It featured notes of balaton cherry, medicinal cherry, and maraschino cherry, with much less vanilla than anticipated. Frankly, considering the label mentions a blend of under 50 barrels, I expected more depth; it's rather one-dimensional, a 'cherry bomb.' The body is on the lighter side. The finish was dry, with no significant or worthwhile aftertaste. If you're willing to pay over $40 for a mixer, that's your choice. However, for that price, superior bourbons can be found. If you're curious about this bottle, I suggest trying a sample at a bar, liquor store, or tasting event before spending more than $18 on it. You won't find it at that price, but that's what it's worth given the experience.

Upon reading that this Calumet 8 Year was being discontinued, I felt compelled to purchase some. I had been curious to try it for some time, and its impending unavailability made the decision for me. This is quite good. While not exceptionally unique, it possesses all the characteristics I seek in bourbon: Sweetness, a touch of spice, leathery notes, and very minimal burn. The finish is brief but pleasant. I've encountered other reviews suggesting it tastes somewhat "thin" for an 8-year-old. I can partially understand that sentiment, but not entirely. It has a pleasant richness and coats the tongue adequately. There are four bottles remaining at the location where I found this one. I might need to go back and get another before it's gone permanently.

I liked the aroma, with notes of vanilla, honeysuckle, orange, candy, and a hint of cinnamon. The flavor was a disappointment, though. It's harsh for a 90-proof spirit, tasting strongly of alcohol, with prominent oak and corn. For $50, better options exist. It softens with an ice cube and some time, but it's still unremarkable.

A very pleasing bourbon, excellent for savoring as its full flavor complexity can be appreciated without the harshness common in most aged bourbons. It's sweet on the palate and soft on the nose, with hints of honey and vanilla.

It goes for about $45. I don't think it's worth that much. The aroma is faint. It feels watery in the mouth and leaves quickly. For what it costs, Four Roses Single Barrel, Rare Breed, and others are far superior.
