About this bottle

Bushmills created the Steamship Collection as a series of Travel Retail exclusives, honoring the SS Bushmills Steamship launched in 1890. This second bottling in the series is a triple-distilled single malt that was finished in ex-ruby port pipes. These pipes, pre-seasoned for 3 years, were procured from Portugal's Douro Valley. The spirit, which carries no age statement, is presented at 40% ABV in a custom-made box and became available in November 2016 at select global Duty Free locations.

Nose: Deep, sweet, plum-like fruits with notes of oak cask, marzipan, vanilla, and malt extract. Hints of orchard fruit appear later, becoming more prominent. While berry flavors lead, the aroma surprisingly stays clean and fresh. As it evolves, the scent expands without losing its vibrancy. Palate: Sweet, full-bodied, and subtly tannic upon entry. It blossoms with red grape, blackberry, mulberry, black cherry, and port wine as it develops. Chocolate and cappuccino notes emerge, followed by rose-water Turkish delight and tamarind muhalbiyah. The mouthfeel is exceptionally juicy with a velvety and satin texture. Finish: Medium duration. Red fruit flavors reminiscent of port-wine jelly transition into the aftertaste, complemented by gentle cinnamon and a lingering milk chocolate essence. The port cask heavily influences this whisky, but it does so in a pleasing and well-executed way. 'Well-executed' is the key descriptor here, and for a change, it's not a criticism. Your enjoyment will hinge entirely on your preference for highly "crafted", cask-influenced, sweet-profile whiskies. Purists might find it overly adorned and superficial, but its rich character is hard to deny. It's simply enjoyable. It lacks complexity or depth. Everything is presented openly and confidently, creating a very focused experience. However, calling it basic or one-dimensional would be unfair – akin to scolding a charming, affectionate puppy for minor mischief (how cruel!). In many respects, this is an ideal spirit for personal enjoyment or as a gift for both seasoned whisky drinkers and casual consumers. Despite the minimum 40% ABV, its character is so robust and flavorful that the lower alcohol content enhances its broad appeal. Only a truly cold-hearted and pretentious individual would dislike this. My sole concern is the cost, which strikes me as slightly too high. Sampled from a 30 ml pour. At two-thirds the current price, I would purchase a bottle immediately. "Good": 83/100 (3.5 stars)

★★★★★ Wow, this is a remarkable find. This spirit is precisely what I look for. It earns a top rating with little effort. Perhaps its subtle heat kept it from delivering that final thrill I anticipated. It contains all the elements that define an outstanding spirit. I really hope to acquire a bottle sometime soon...

The aroma is rich with plums and cherries. A subtle floral hint, akin to rose petals, is present. On the palate, a whisper of cinnamon joins the stone fruits from the initial scent. The finish is light yet enduring, with a potential hint of mint. Superb.

The aroma has light orange and spice. On the palate, there's sweet chocolate, honeycomb, and pepper. The finish is acceptably spicy. I'm sampling this and just looked up the bottle. 100 is a bit expensive, honestly. I'd buy 50 other whiskeys before this one.

Chalk full of cocoa, fruit, and nuts. Delightful, but the conclusion is absent... requires a greater proof.
