Bushmills Distillery Reserve 12 Year

Warning: This review contains extensive golf-related commentary. During a golf trip to the north coast of Ireland in September 2016, we visited the Giant's Causeway and Old Bushmills Distillery for a tasting of this "distillery only" single malt. For golfers considering a trip to Great Britain or Ireland, this itinerary is highly recommended. The natural beauty of the links courses along the rugged, sandy north coast is indescribable. After flying into Dublin, we drove northwest through picturesque farmland towards Letterkenny. We played five rounds in the Republic of Ireland, starting at Narin & Portnoo, then two courses at Rosapenna (Old Tom Morris & Sandy Hills), and both at Ballyliffin (Old & Glashedy). We then crossed into Northern Ireland (UK) to play Portstewart, Castlerock, two rounds at Royal Portrush, and finally Ardglass, as an alternative to the highly-rated Royal County Down. Had we extended our stay by a week, we could have played more courses. Ardglass, with its historic, fortified clubhouse dating back to 1405 and stunning ocean views, helped ease our disappointment. Diageo acquired Bushmills in 2005 and traded it to Jose Cuervo in 2014 for the remaining share of Don Julio Tequila. At the time of our visit, Bushmills reported an annual production of 11 million liters, though much of this was for bottling services for other distilleries, mainly Jameson. Bushmills' own production remained relatively stable at around 4.5 million liters. The bottling process here was the opposite of Springbank's; it was fully mechanized, unlike the hand-labeling and inspection at Springbank. The Distillery Reserve we tasted was memorable. Aged for 12 years in both Oloroso Sherry and bourbon casks, it's bottled at 40% ABV and appears medium amber and rich in the glass. The aroma made a strong initial impression, and the palate was both dry and smooth, with a well-balanced blend of fruits, nuts, and spices. The approachable ABV and pleasant finish made it enjoyable for everyone. Would I travel that far again for another glass? Absolutely. This year's golf trip will focus on the southwest coast of Ireland, an area my wife and I explored in 2002. I'm eagerly anticipating it.

This Irish Single Malt Whiskey from The Old Bushmills Distillery, matured for 12 years predominantly in former Spanish Oloroso Sherry barrels, with lesser amounts in former Bourbon and Marsala Wine barrels. It presents an aromatic beginning with hints of grain, wood, dried fruit, herbs, and spice. Its rich and intricate middle offers flavors of apple, pear, malt, and Sherry, concluding in a balanced, medium-length finish with undertones of oak, chocolate, and honey. January 2024

A special malt only available directly from Bushmills. They rightly celebrate this reserve. After enjoying a complimentary glass during the distillery tour, I wanted to buy a bottle. The initial taste is very mellow and substantial, with whispers of honey and marmalade that transition into a pleasant, warm finish. Seeking the finest Irish whiskey? Search no further. Superb!

★★★½ This 12-year expression is available post-distillery tour. We got a complimentary 12-year tasting after touring the distillery; this is a spirit sold only on-site. It's a decent whisky, not particularly remarkable, but essential during a distillery visit.

An excellent experience, though the finish is somewhat aggressive. The aroma is sweet, with notes of chocolate and red berries. The taste is rich and offers hints of honeyed sweetness. The finish, unfortunately, is brief and may be challenging for novices.

This is for the 10-year bottling: Pale in appearance, a very vibrant aroma, with a smooth flavor and finish. A pleasant whiskey for warm weather. Eager to sample the other Bushmills expressions.
