Bunnahabhain Warehouse 9: 2014 Canasta Matured

Nose: Astringent wood, licorice confectionery, and dry nutty sherry notes are present. After a period in the glass, appealing sandalwood and cedarwood aromas emerge, but little else. The addition of water did not enhance the profile. Palate: A very sharp introduction with hot cinnamon, tannins, clove, and pepper. It presents robust dark malt and treacle, alongside salty and bitter orange peel. The texture is full-bodied but neither heavy nor oily. Finish: Medium length. Possesses hot, spicy malt. A green apple note lingers in the aftertaste. Bunnahabhain consistently offers several unique hand-selected cask strength bottlings exclusive to the distillery. While I've sampled numerous expressions, this one, though an interesting dram, doesn't rank among the distillery's finest I've encountered. The aroma significantly improved with resting time in the glass, but the palate saw less enhancement. Dilution also proved detrimental, merely thinning and diminishing the character, though it did soften the more intense spicy elements. This 10-year-old bottling is likely best suited for devoted Bunnahabhain aficionados; for me, it lacked the luscious quality of their older oloroso-matured whiskies, the rich fruity intensity of the 12-year-old cask-strength variant, or the approachable chocolate-and-nut character of the standard 12-year-old. While Canasta is a cream sherry, I don't believe ex-canasta casks are an exceptional pairing for Bunnahabhain spirit, and I suspect this specific cask (number 2786) was not among the superior ones.
