Bunnahabhain 30 Old Particular

I decided to pause my blind tasting challenge to explore this 30-year-old Bunnahabhain, distilled in December 1988 and bottled in August 2019 from a single ex-bourbon cask, yielding 146 bottles at a robust 57% cask strength. The nose initially presents a subtle hint of sea salt and light smoke, which recedes to make way for tropical fruits like mango, papaya, peaches, lemon zest, and cherries, followed by roasted macadamia nuts, dark chocolate, and a rich caramel embrace, before transitioning to light minerality, ginger spice, leather, and light cereal notes with a strong ethanol presence. The taste offers a viscous mouthfeel, beginning with a thick caramel frosting on lemon vanilla cupcakes, then a light hint of sea salt and smoke that remain in the background of mangoes, peaches, nectarines, and cherries, followed by medium spice and light minerality that gradually fades to dark chocolate and barrel spices like ginger, cloves, leather, and medium oak, with a high ethanol burn. The finish is long, featuring light ash, minerality, sea spray, peaches, Meyer lemon, mangoes, papaya, macadamia nuts, dark chocolate, a hint of ginger spice, leather, and medium oak that lingers for several minutes. Considering its 30 years in the barrel, this has aged exceptionally well, showcasing wonderful complexity and flavor balance. It has a very thick texture, a blend of light sea spray and smoke intertwined with tropical and citrus fruits, roasted nuts, dark chocolate, subtle barrel spices, and rich caramel, culminating in a long, lingering finish. I'm truly amazed by this expression. I even pitted it against my favorite Hazelburn 13 (2020) in a head-to-head, and though it was close, the Bunnahabhain emerged victorious due to its richer mouthfeel and superior flavor balance. Alas, it will be a sad occasion when this bottle is emptied. However, based on information from online retailers, there appear to be several other Bunnahabhain single casks from independent bottlers available at a much lower cost than a standard 25-year-old release, should that day arrive.
