Those who frequently read my assessments may assume I visit Italy often. This summer, however, marked my first trip there in a year. My career change delayed our autumn journey, and COVID-19 canceled our spring break. To commemorate our deserved summer vacation, we shopped in Firenze and had drinks at our usual place, Caffè Perseo, in Piazza della Signore, by the Michelangelo replica of David. I typically enjoy a whiskey there, as I did on this occasion. Because of COVID-19, they could not provide a menu. The server invited me to the bar inside to select my drink. Upon spotting this unusual Bruichladdich, I immediately decided to try it. I searched for information but found none, aside from it possibly being a rare import to Italy. Further research later confirmed it was indeed quite a scarce bottle, intended for the Italian market. The aroma presented a gentle, atypical peat-smoke for a Bruichladdich, with hints of nuts and fruit. The palate mirrored these flavors but with greater intensity. The smoky note was perfectly balanced, and combined with sweet fruity notes, it created a complex, full taste. I don't believe it's officially a peated whisky, but I certainly detected smoky notes. I also noticed raisins, nuts, and faint hints of peaches. Even my 14-year-old son, who often samples my drinks and typically dislikes my peated whiskies, enjoyed it immediately. The finish leaned towards fresh fruit, making it ideal for a warm summer day. If your palate aligns with mine, don't hesitate to try this, or even purchase a bottle if you encounter it!
