Bruichladdich 14yo, The Italian Collection, Sassicaia Wine Cask Finish

Maturing spirits in Sassicaia wine casks is my preferred wood finish for whisky. The drawback is the scarcity of single malt expressions crafted this way. In 2007, Bruichladdich introduced "the Italian collection," featuring whiskies aged in various Italian wine casks. I managed to acquire several; the Barolo was excellent, and now it's time to sample the Sassicaia, bottled at 46% alcohol by volume. The aroma is heavenly and incredibly complex, with notes of orange and lemon zest, orange juice, kiwi, and pineapple. Hints of white chocolate, crushed almonds, hazelnut, marzipan, and orange candy are present. After some air contact, perfumed aromas emerged. It's truly fantastic. The taste was nearly perfect, possessing a lactic texture. I'd describe it as oranges with salt alongside a white chocolate bar. It is absolutely delicious. The finish was very satisfying, offering elegant notes of white chocolate and tobacco, along with sulfur, acidic oranges, and salt. Orange juice notes lingered. Ultimately, this further confirms how exceptional these cask types are at imparting flavor and aroma to a fine single malt spirit. It's a wonderfully elegant whisky that I wish I could enjoy forever. Despite being 14 years old, it exhibits remarkable sophistication. The depth of complexity is astounding, revealing numerous distinct layers of flavor. My rating is 97 out of 100. Cheers!
