Broad Branch Big Winston Cask Strength Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Tarnished copper in color. It runs off the glass quickly. The nose is dominated by the barrel, with layers of oak: lumber, toasted, and charred. Some notes from the rye are hidden within, along with dark cacao and toasted coconut. The front palate is quite smooth with an oily mouthfeel, and sweetness appears after the initial heat. Initial flavors include slightly stale corn, dark chocolate, and stored oak planks. The finish is varied, bringing everything together. A few drops of water reveal a lot of vanilla and intensify the toasted coconut. It becomes much sweeter without losing the transition to the wood-dominated finish. After some time, a hint of mint emerges. While perfectly drinkable at cask strength, I prefer it with a splash of water as it sweetens and adds real depth. It's more engaging than the Big Winston and extends the tasting experience. These producers are doing excellent work. Whether it's their yeast, water, or something else, many of their offerings share a commonality, but this one is certainly the most complex.

Caramel, toffee, and very rich, warm spice with a lasting finish. Possibly my favorite bourbon ever.

The taste brings notes of bread, caramel, and toffee. It has a mellow, lingering finish.
