This dram is a standout. It's highly aromatic, with an appealing blend of dark chocolate, raspberry coulis, and woodsmoke on the nose. The palate is richer than its alcohol content suggests, with less bite: toffee, more peat, and stewed fruits intermingle. This is a very successful port finish, reminiscent of an older Laphroaig, though significantly more expensive! The finish features classic sweet-and-peat characteristics, with more smoke than anticipated for its age, and it was sadly missed when it was gone.

About this bottle
Bowmore 27 Year Port Cask is the concluding bottling in the Vintner's Trilogy, following the 18 Year Double Matured Manzanilla and 26 Year French Oak Barrique editions released in late 2017. The Port Cask underwent its entire maturation in Bowmore's renowned No. 1 Vaults Warehouse on Islay; the initial 13 years were spent in ex-bourbon barrels, followed by 14 years in port pipes. It is bottled at 48.3% ABV and was anticipated for release in the fall of 2018.

The oldest whisky tasted today, aged in a port barrel, all to my liking. Unfortunately, it was love at first taste and at $740 a bottle, it felt similar to admiring someone out of reach - an impossible dream. But it's good to have dreams, and at least I got to sample this divine nectar, unlike the unattainable person. Who knows, maybe someday!
