Black Mountain Colorado Bourbon Whiskey

Appearance: This distinctive bourbon presented with a polished brass hue, exhibiting very fine viscous legs that lingered invitingly. Nose: The aged yet welcoming aroma offered notes of dry corn, dried grasses, honey crisp apple, honey, caramel, and vanillins. Palate: The robust taste had a chalky texture, featuring notes of plum, cherry, caramel, vanilla, and spice from the barrel. Finish: The bourbon concluded with a dry, persistent bitter aftertaste. Impressions: This special release was crafted by Distillery 291 as a present for Black Bear upon its opening as a bourbon bar (prior to the distillery's existence) in Green Mountain Falls. For those familiar with 291's signature style, the familial resemblance is clear, yet in a direct comparison, this bourbon is lighter in color and more subdued in flavor than 291's standard offering. I had the opportunity to taste this with a couple of friends who had a sample box containing numerous whiskies. This is a French whisky that tells the tale of the WILD BOAR-WOLF. This mythical creature, half Wild Boar and half Wolf, supposedly inhabits the Black Mountain where this whisky originates. There's even a video of someone attempting to find it. Quite fascinating. Bottled at 45% ABV, it has a pale straw color. On the nose: Vanilla, Pepper, Cake, lemon, fresh forest. It's not the most impressive aroma, mainly sweet and citrusy... basic. On the palate, it's actually a good dram. Creamy, with a slight peat influence, but it becomes somewhat watery and then oily. The aftertaste is quite interesting as it resembles a peated grain whisky. It's ashy yet creamy. Overall, this is an intriguing dram, not extraordinary, but worth trying. I gave it a score of 78 out of 100; I could have easily awarded it at least 80 points for the compelling story.
