Black Flannel Distilling Black Gold

This whiskey is made from unhopped stout and has been in charred white oak casks for at least two months. It has a chestnut color and slow-forming legs. The aroma offers cinnamon, coffee grounds, butterscotch, and overripe bananas, reminiscent of a stronger, deeper Guinness. Vanilla, dark chocolate, and spicy oak dominate the palate, with molasses and coconut appearing after a rest. It drinks very smoothly, almost too smoothly, and feels a bit muted. The substantial stout flavor truly shines on the finish, which is medium-long and transitions to bitter baking cocoa, chili pepper, and an ashy, salty taste. Adding water brings out crisp green pear and watermelon rind aromas, a unique sweet and bitter scent. The palate remains the same, but the finish gains some chili heat. Overall, it's a satisfying whiskey, especially the stout-like finish, though it could benefit from more time in the cask for wood influence. It's an easy drinker but lacks complexity. While not something I'd actively seek out, I know people who would appreciate it. I'm thankful to a friend for this bottle and the chance to share it.
