Zara Pearce 3.5

This whiskey was a present from my son, received through the Craft Whisky Club. It's the third bottle from this membership, and each has been quite good and an interesting choice. This expression continues that trend. Black Buttons is a new distillery for me, but one I will watch closely. In this blend, they've combined four distinct whiskeys (I'm assuming they distilled them, but I have limited information) comprising 21.5% spice, 17.5% base, 35% oak, and 26% sweet distillates. I understand it's aged in rather small 30-gallon barrels and the mash bill is 60% Corn, 20% Wheat, 11% Malted Barley, and 9% Rye. This is a spicy whiskey with noticeable peppery notes that I really enjoy. The aroma has hints of dill, cedar, oak tannins, caramel, and vanilla. There's no shortage of spice, with black pepper, ginger, a touch of hard butterscotch candy, and a trace of cumin seeds. On the palate, it is both sweet and spicy. There's a suggestion of boiled peanuts, some cardboard, caramelized sugar, pepper, a little ginger, a whisper of butterscotch, and rye spice. Some notes here remind me of flavors I've detected in both a Joseph Magnus blend and Lot 40. Intriguing. I like this, but it might be a bit unconventional for some. It's certainly an interesting whiskey, and it will have me seeking out other creative expressions from this grain-to-glass small distillery.

Disappointing. Absolutely no body, like drinking water. The palate was very floral, but more like an old air freshener than something enjoyable. I'll let this sit for a while before trying again, but I'm very let down by this selection.
