Black Button Pre-Prohibition Style Straight Bourbon

An intense, grain-to-glass American Straight Bourbon Whiskey from Jason Barrett, founder of Black Button Distilling in Rochester, New York. It's made with a mash bill of 80% Corn, 10% Malted Barley, and 10% Rye; then aged for 5 years in American white oak barrels. It has an aromatic start of grains, wood, fruit, nuts, and spices; its bold development adds notes of caramel apple, butterscotch, toffee, and brown sugar; leading to a spicy, medium-length finish with notes of black pepper, oak, cinnamon, vanilla, walnut, and cedar. Feels stronger than its stated proof, with heat and intensity. It's not bad, though; there's a potent vanilla and caramel sweetness, complemented by wheat and malted cereal flavors. The body is medium-thin, and the finish vanishes quickly, likely due to the heat. It's good and enjoyable, but not well-rounded.

This one has a dry, almost sandpaper-like texture after sitting on the tongue for a moment. However, there are many interesting flavors on the backend, almost reminiscent of a cigar. Upfront, I detect some oak, suggesting this is a very young bourbon.

From the 2023 Flaviar Advent Calendar - Day 5. Nose: notes of caramel, fruit, and chocolate. Palate: herbal, vanilla, and baking spice notes, with a spiciness that intensifies in the mouth after swallowing. Finish: spicy, oily, slightly bitter notes.

The aroma features vanilla, toffee, and brown sugar. The palate is rich with butterscotch and caramel, accompanied by a consistent baking spice. It concludes with a long, sweet finish, accented by black pepper at the very end.
