Bird Dog Bourbon

I'm not sure I understand the negative opinions on this. It's very low proof, somewhat one-dimensional, and lacks complexity – but it's not offensive or undrinkable like some bourbons and whiskies I've encountered. The aroma is very faint, almost imperceptible. If anything, it smells like generic bourbon but extremely diluted and muted – which it essentially is. The initial flavor is a touch of fall apple, slightly baked. There's cinnamon in the finish when chewed. There's a slight minerality and a peach/apricot/stone-fruit quality that reminds me of Dickel – but to a much lesser extent than most actual Dickel products. I can hold this in my mouth for maybe 5-10 seconds before it even begins to develop the slightest spice/burn. I daresay I even appreciate how crisp it is. This reminds me of the standard Jim Beam profile without the peanut note. If it can be found for under $18, I don't think it's the worst purchase. It's currently $15 at the nearby state-controlled store. There are definitely better bottles at $20, but there are bottles at $30-$40 that are far worse. Take that as you will.

Color: Compared to its 10-year-old sibling, this Kentucky bourbon is visibly lighter. It has an old gold hue in my Glencairn glass with very thin, watery legs. Nose: The aroma features lemon zest and orange, caramel, barnyard hay, and a trace of car exhaust. Taste: The flavor is rather ordinary. Nothing remarkable. A touch of oak tannins, some leftover Halloween caramels no one wanted, along with green grapes and grapefruit. Finish: The finish is dry, with an aftertaste reminiscent of dry white wine. It also leaves a nearly effervescent mouthfeel. Thoughts: This bourbon is adequate. I'm glad I experienced it; it won't be a personal favorite, but considering the brand's overall lineup, it makes sense that their bourbon wouldn't stand out since they focus on flavored whiskeys. While that's generally not my preference, if it is yours, this brand is for you! However, I'm afraid Bird Dog's introductory bourbon isn't quite to my taste. My apologies!

Before exploring bourbons such as Buffalo Trace, Knob Creek, and Elijah Craig, I considered this quite enjoyable. However, considering the price, Ezra Brooks Black offers a superior experience. Bird Dog presents an upfront, vanilla-like aroma and initial taste that fades into a flavor reminiscent of Texas lake water – earthy and somewhat unclean. I've found many less expensive bourbons affect me similarly. I will not be repurchasing this.

The color is very light, suggesting minimal aging. It tastes strongly of water and smoke. Without knowing, I'd guess this is one of those common 40% ABV bourbons found in grocery stores. The finish is actually decent, with rye spice remaining after the weak flavor notes. It tastes like bourbon, but it's what you'd choose if you wanted something different from Jim Beam but with a similar lack of flavor.

This reminds me of a vodka with bourbon flavoring, rather than genuine bourbon. Specifics about its aging are difficult to find, and likely for good reason. I can only assume a few years of maturation were involved. Contrary to other opinions, even considering its lower price point, this wouldn't meet my standards. There are many better options available for a similar or lesser cost.

The bottle art is awesome, but the spirit itself is lacking. It has no punch in its taste profile, is quite dull, and doesn't hold up well when mixed with soda. The older expressions might be an improvement, but I'll likely just get the sweetened ones if I purchase from this company again.
