Benromach Sassicaia Wood Finish 2009

This expression immediately earns a spot on my top shelf. The prior year, I understood the potential of a Sassicaia wood finish whisky when I sampled an exceptional Arran Sassicaia. Sadly, it's no longer available, and its discontinuation deeply disappointed me, as I couldn't acquire a bottle, not even through wine searcher. It will perpetually remain in my memory (and my palate). Then, an email from a regular online vendor arrived, announcing a new Benromach Sassicaia wood finish whisky. Naturally, I purchased it. It exceeded all my expectations. Presented at 45% ABV, it boasts a distinctive pink cantaloupe hue, a color I've never before observed in a dram. My partner described it as "rosé gold." The aroma was intensely tropical, with immediate pineapple, white chocolate, a smoky spice, damp earth, and a highly perfumed, yet not overpowering, character. Following the initial taste, notes of dry peaches became apparent. The palate was remarkable, featuring only three components, but each was incredibly pleasing: Hershey's milk chocolate "Bites," pineapple, and ginger. The finish offered a distinct experience: a puff of pleasant, almost minty, refreshing smoke accompanied by ginger. For $60, one cannot find a better value. The intricate layers and delightful tropical notes are exceptionally well-executed. My rating is 96 out of 100, with the sole deduction being a slightly subdued aroma. Cheers!

Nose: honey, caramel, oak Body: light Palate: sweet, vanilla toffee, oak, caramel, chocolate, a hint of spice Finish: short with oak and a hint of distant smoke Note: a very pleasant dram, very good but not great, and extremely easy to drink. My first thought was 'holy oak,' and it turned out to be a delicious mix of sweet bourbon cask flavors and oak.

I don't have notes from the time of tasting for the pour I selected last week from the extensive whisky menu at Boisdale in London, but I do remember it tasting like a thicker, more honeyed version of the 10-year. This is only the second Benromach I've tried, but it certainly won't be the last.
