Benromach Cask Strength Vintage 2008 (Batch 1)

The initial batch of Benromach presents a sweet aroma reminiscent of fresh raisins and pleasant vanilla. I also detect a hint of orange. On the palate, the whisky becomes rich and smooth, beautifully showcasing the sherry cask influence. Its salty, sherry flavor is very pure. The underlying peat character emerges towards the finish. When paired with Dor Blue cheese, it creates a perfect harmony of saltiness and the cheese's distinct flavor. An ideal accompaniment! (Sampled at Breda & Gin Breda.)

It's interesting how my palate has evolved. Now, after this bottle has been open for ten months, while I still enjoy the flavors, I perceive a strong alcohol burn, characteristic of a young spirit. In comparison, I've had much better older whiskies (at twice the price) with very little alcohol burn, and they hold a special place in my heart! I'm getting Batch 3 tomorrow and look forward to comparing them directly!

The aroma is like caramel candy at a bonfire, with sweet notes and smoke. The taste is rich and drying, with a burst of black pepper, finishing with the slight bitterness of dark chocolate. I find the finish to be short, but that's where the smoke appears without being overpowering.

This complimentary sample was enjoyed before the Old and Rare tasting. It's a very pleasant dram; I initially rated it 4.25 without water. However, upon comparing it to the Old and Rare selection, it presented as much younger and more ethanol-forward. Despite this, it still merits its rating for the price. My revised score is 3.75 to 4.

Opened on 1-21-2020 and tasted again on 6-25-2020. This second sampling, with a much higher rating, demonstrates how some (if not most) whiskies improve their flavor profile considerably after some air gets into the bottle. It's excellent now.

Excellent stuff. Golden raisin and vanilla on the nose, with a subtly peated, spicy orange flavor. The finish has a slight acridity, but it's enjoyable. Very oily! A superb pour.
