Benrinnes 10 Single Cask, 2019 (Cárn Mór)

This is the initial part of a five-part series of reviews from a private tasting of Independent Bottlers at my local liquor store. I was invited again to a private tasting of Independent Bottlers at my local cigar & liquor shop. While the proprietor is very knowledgeable, he typically brings in an expert: a proud (but humble) member of the Keepers of the Quaich, who enthusiastically shares all his knowledge and stories about the drams he serves, consistently ensuring an enjoyable afternoon. This time, I brought my 14-year-old son along, who is gradually developing an appreciation for the subtle complexities of fine whiskies and – to my pleasure – is particularly growing fond of moderately peated and smoked whiskies. He also enjoys a nice wine or port finish. The selection was larger than last time but was generally arranged by taste profile to help us anticipate their characteristics. From fresh and fruity on the left, the bottles progressed towards the middle to the more neutral, robust, yet fuller-bodied whiskies, and to the right, the more complex, heavier, and typically peat-smoked ones. My son and I decided to taste and share just five sample drams. He chose the first one, and then we alternated picks for the subsequent ones, but we always agreed on our choices. 1. Càrn Mòr - Strictly Limited - Benrinnes 10 Year Old 2009 2. Hunter Laing - Talisker 2008 - 9 Year Old Old Malt Cask 3. Claxton's The Single Cask - Bunnahabhain 2013 - Staoisha - 6 Years Old 4. Caol Ila 5-Year-Old 2009 - Hepburn's Choice (Langside) 5. Ardnamurchan Spirit 2019 AD My son's first selection was a 10-year-old Benrinnes, bottled by Càrn Mòr under its ‘Strictly Limited’ line. He was very interested due to its decade of aging in a Sherry Butt. The aroma of this Speyside dram offered notes of fresh oak and vanilla, as expected, and the palate delivered. The Sherry aging was evident but not overpowering, offering hints of candy, fruit, and some salt. The finish was moderate, somewhat dry, and oaky. We both agreed it was a strong start. Nose: vibrant, exotic fruit, pineapple, sunscreen, vanilla, creamy, Faint notes of bourbon or rye spice, perfumed. Body: opulent, juicy, woody, profound and full. Palate: berries, woody, touches of juniper, subtly floral, a hint of char, toffee and caramel. Finish: moderate, woody, rich and slightly peppery.
