Aged 38 years in the cask (bottled 2016) and I am 39 years old. This is indeed my birth year whiskey from 1977. To kick off the celebration for my upcoming 40th, I opened this and several other fine bottles with a group of whiskey-loving friends on a Friday night, followed by separate get-togethers for those who couldn't attend. I've sampled it at least four times over the past two weeks. The bottle lives up to its label: cedar wood, a hint of raspberry, and of course, port. Finally, a top-tier port-finished whisky. While I'm not typically a fan, this one is excellent. I can detect a subtle note of the Benriach new make, which I don't always appreciate, but the casks are the star, delivering beautifully. It definitely earns a 4.5. I would repurchase it around the $120-$150 USD range, but at approximately $400 USD, it was considerably more. Realistically, it should be a 4 based on price, but sentiment prevails, and I'll round up. It will be another decade before I experience a whisky of this age, price, and caliber.

Water from Burnside's underground springs feeds the BenRiach distillery, which has been making whiskey since 1898. This single malt from Speyside was distilled in August 1977 and bottled in June 2016 as a 38 Year expression. It has an ABV of 43.1%. After maturing for 38 years and receiving a tawny port cask finish, this bottling represents the 13th batch of BenRiach's single cask releases, with only 237 bottles produced.
