After the initial alcohol vapors fade, a magnificent and intricate aroma emerges, rich with meaty, full-bodied, and exceptionally savory qualities. Notes of smoked ham, grilled beef, dark soy sauce, perique tobacco, toasted walnuts, Brazil nuts, malt extract, beef broth, and a refined layer of rancio are present. It showcases powerful single malt whisky scents. Adding water at first mutes the aroma, but it gradually returns in a softer, perhaps better-balanced form, though the initial intensity of the neat aroma was missed. Over a longer period, a sweet, honeyed scent develops. 9/10 Taste: A sweet, substantial, and viscous initial impression that gives way to a luxurious array of oloroso cask influences. This powerful sherry character intensifies and persists, extending through the finish without overpowering the diverse and complex flavors. The sherry constitutes half the sensory experience, yet it shares prominence with many other excellent elements. Notes of tobacco, leather, nuts, chocolate, coffee, and aged oak are detected. Dilution reduces the palate's intensity but enhances integration and introduces a pleasant hint of spice (ginger, cinnamon). Water doesn't detract from the palate but alters it; personal preference leans towards neat. The mouthfeel is exceptionally divine. 10/10. Conclusion: Stewed fruit, sherry, and oak lead into a remarkably long and progressively drier finish. It is captivating with impressive endurance. This whisky's flavors lingered for an hour post-tasting, continuing to evolve on the palate. Water slightly enhances dry, briny notes that are quite pleasing. 9/10. A superb single malt whisky, a true pleasure to experience. This bottling is exceptional, offering a wonderful journey from beginning to end, with the distinctive rugged, bold character of the Ben Nevis distillate from the west highlands expertly highlighted by sherry aging. This expression is distinctly different from the typical sweet sherry offerings from Speyside or the eastern highlands. It is a masterful whisky, entirely matured in a superior ex-oloroso cask (#BN9819). While the sherry influence is prominent throughout the tasting, it never feels overwhelming. It is a masterpiece, and finding another bottle would be a great fortune. This dram was savored for nearly two hours, enjoyed first neat and then diluted to approximately 45% ABV. The only consolation is that the standard Ben Nevis 10 Year Old provides a similar level of enjoyment at a more accessible price point. Ben Nevis has consistently been a favored distillery, and this whisky reaffirms the long-held belief that the west coast of the Scottish Highlands (along with the nearby Hebrides and the Kintyre peninsula) produces the finest whisky. “Outstanding”: 91/100 (5 stars)
