Bellevoye Grand Whisky

What was the last bottle you decided to try on a whim? I remember browsing the Duty Free shop at the Paris airport when a cheerful salesperson enthusiastically recommended this Bellevoye Rouge Triple Malt Grand Whisky. It's made from three French whiskies aged 5-10 years in French oak and then an additional 6 months in Grand Cru casks. The salesperson's description of French cognac barrels intrigued me, and I bought it. The aroma is comforting, like visiting a grandmother's house, with notes of cherry, candied oranges, black tea, and a hint of old knit sweaters with tobacco. With time, it develops a rich, dark honey scent. Drinking it neat at first was harsh. An initial sweet date flavor, reminiscent of medicine, quickly gives way to an overpowering, almost bitter, allspice taste. This leaves my tongue feeling dry, with a moderate and unsatisfying lingering oak and spice. Considering the elegant packaging, I had hoped the contents would be equally impressive. The aroma was very pleasant, so I was disappointed by the taste. The dram improved significantly after sitting and with added water, smoothing out and revealing notes of orange, nutmeg, and a bitter herbal amaro. While I appreciate its uniqueness, I probably wouldn't drink it on its own. I'd be interested in trying Bellevoye Rouge in a Manhattan cocktail and am thinking about my next trip to France.
