Belfour Rye Whiskey

Double pour from the shoulders. Having already sampled this startup's standard bourbon, I decided to try the rye, hoping it might compensate for the bourbon's shortcomings. The 70-20-10 mash bill provides this rye with a good initial burst of sugars. This is one of my preferred mash bills, and just enough warm sugars balance the rye's spiciness, making it seem like it might offer a robust and fulfilling experience. Unfortunately, raw edges of young malt and corn are readily apparent. With proper aging, everything here could be a good, if not amazing, rye, but it is not well-aged. The haste to rush young products to market has doomed many startups, and the cemetery may need more space. Overall, it's not a bad drink, but at the same price as a 10-year Whistle Pig, unless you're solely aiming to add distinctive bottles to your collection, this is a definite pass. With an MSRP well into the upper seventies, this is a decent budget rye that, unfortunately, isn't budget-priced. Cheers!

During a blind whiskey tasting with friends, I couldn't identify this one. The flavors were quite bold, but not entirely pleasant. I detected a good amount of malt, but also a significant youthfulness. It doesn't have a typical rye flavor. It's sweet, but also has an acetone-like quality. It stood out as unique, but not entirely in a positive way. I would try it again, but it also seems to cost nearly double what it appears to be worth.

With 70% rye, there’s some spice at the end but not enough to need a mixer. Drinking it neat at my place. Peppery with enough body to make it worthwhile but it doesn’t really linger on the tongue. A little costly around here but the bottle itself is almost worth it. A certain celebrity can be proud of his product, in my opinion.

Nose of young oak and unsalted cashews. Young oak continues with nutty notes and maple syrup. Some rye spice in the finish. An easy-drinking and sweeter rye overall.

A good rye. It's spicy and grainy, with a slight fruitiness.

I would skip this bottle at $16.99 plus tax. A review is definitely forthcoming.
