For its price point, this is a satisfactory beverage. The aroma was sweet and nutty. The taste mirrored this, but with an added spicy element. While not the most delightful experience, it is quite pleasant.

About this bottle
Basil Hayden's is one of four Kentucky straight bourbons in the Beam Small Batch Collection, alongside Booker's, Baker's, and Knob Creek. While Basil Hayden, Sr. does not appear on the namesake bottle, his image is on every bottle of Old Grand-Dad. This bottling features his high-rye bourbon mash bill. It is the lowest proof offering in the Small Batch Collection, at 80 proof. This is an older bottling marked with an 8-year age statement; it has since been replaced by a label without an age statement.

This is my first bourbon. It takes some getting used to. However, it's soft and sweet. I think it's quite drinkable. An enjoyable first bourbon experience. Score: 7.2/10.
Caramel and scorched honey. Gentle and agreeable.
Silky with bold caramel flavors. A light finish
Sweet notes of vanilla and cherry, with faint hints of oak.
An excellent choice for Manhattans.
