Barrell Bourbon New Year 2018

The nose carries notes of hot corn and hay. The palate has a semi-oily texture, with corn, wood, cherry cola, citrus, and vanilla. The flavor profile on the palate is surprisingly variable with each sip. A few drops of water introduce a lemon polish aroma to the nose and enhance the citrus/fruitiness on the palate. I initially expected to conclude this review by stating it's overpriced. However, it's genuinely a pleasant bourbon. Ultimately, its value depends on your expectations for a solid, cask-strength bottle.

Deep amber color. The smell is rich with honey and vanilla, plus a fresh oak scent. This high-proof bourbon needs time to breathe before enjoying its aroma or flavor. The palate feels full, viscous, peppery, and sweet. The aftertaste is a bit astringent and fiery but fades quickly. It doesn't quite live up to its initial smell or taste.

This was an unplanned purchase on Christmas Eve and ended up being my favorite bourbon of the year. It features notes of peach and apricot jams with a full, viscous mouthfeel. It's an easy sipper despite being 111.2 proof, lacking harshness, bitterness, or excessive spice, which I found appealing.

Herbal notes and apples on the nose, with a touch of alcohol sting. It's quite spicy initially, followed by nutmeg and marshmallows. There's also a hint of furniture polish. This is a winner for those who enjoy spicy and sweet profiles. The finish lingers with cinnamon gum and pecan nibs. Quite nice. Sampled on 6/7/18.

Fiery and spicy. A few drops of water reveal woody, tannic qualities. Cherry chocolate and possibly some nutty elements emerge. The lingering finish is long and hot, with cherry and almond tones.

A potent aroma with dark chocolate and almond notes. The taste mirrors this with brown sugar, and the finish returns to dark chocolate.
