Baltimore Epoch Straight Rye Batch #2

As a resident of Baltimore with a fondness for potent spirits, my view might be biased - but I believe Epoch is somewhat overlooked according to the expert review. This is a substantial, warm, festive spice, citrus zest sip that is one of the very few ryes I have ever considered ordering more of (a serious bourbon fan here, rye rarely appeals to me.) Complexity and depth are already present, but could reach another level. Based on my experience with Epoch, I am extremely eager to discover what might emerge from BWC’s aged reserves in the future. An additional year or two in the barrels might reveal something truly remarkable.

A vibrant aroma of tropical fruits and agricole sits atop a classic and welcome vanilla and maple syrup, typical of American whiskey aged in new casks. It's sweet and substantial on the palate, with a finish that is dry and slightly tannic. With a small addition of water, the more pronounced notes yield to a smoother, malty sweetness reminiscent of lowland Scotch. It's the best two-year rye I've encountered, and at $40 for a 750ml bottle at 100 proof, it comes highly recommended.

The nose has smoke and spice, with a slight tang like sour cherries. The palate is definitely spice-forward with more smoke; the malt is there but not overpowering. I haven't tried it yet, but I imagine it would make a good Manhattan.

Nose of pine needles, violet, nutmeg, and white pepper. Light body with bright notes of mint, lemon curd, cinnamon, tarragon, and caramel, finishing hot and slightly sweet. Significant new oak flavor.

From yesterday. A blind tasting with Sagamore and Epoch 3-Year. It was harsher than Sagamore and, at the time, tasted the same as the 3-Year.

Spicy, with floral notes and high proof. Warm with subtle vanilla undertones. A long finish.
