Ardbeg 21 year old, Single Cask, Distillery Sample, straight from the cask.

This is my ninety-ninth review, and I promised the last ten critics would be especially memorable drams. This is indeed the case, as it's not every day one experiences a 21-year-old single cask Ardbeg, directly from the cask at the distillery, bottled at 49.4% ABV, from a second-fill bourbon barrel. You've always understood that age statements on whiskies, by law, reflect the youngest component in the bottle. That's why you've been told, and perhaps doubted, that certain classic blends like Chivas 12yo or Johnnie 12yo contain older whiskies, but the youngest is twelve years old. Well, let me tell you, this 21yo Ardbeg, a rarity, will one day be part of the standard "Ardbeg Ten." It's one element of the final single malt sold for about $70 globally. That was a wild fact our tour guide shared before pouring this ancient spirit. On the nose, it was surprisingly fruity. Pineapple, green apple juice, and herbal medicine. Cider and a medicinal skin lotion. Tropical fruits; Sambuca, not peaty at all initially, feeling very refined. Seawater. After a taste, the aroma resembled an apple coated in lotion for burns. Seawater with pineapple and a faint hint of tar. Very alluring and complex. A perfect score here. On the palate, fruitiness meets peat. Grapefruit, apple cider, and smoked pineapple. Peppery, gingery, a bold yet manageable spiciness. Very fresh. The second sip offered apple and vanilla; it's like biting into a wonderfully mellow peaty green apple. Aftertaste was magnificent. Ashy, fruity, ashy, fruity, smoky, fruity – these layers dance unstoppably. A second taste was all about smoky splendor with some fresh fruitiness. So satisfying! Overall, I want you to know that I handpicked the last ten reviews. Amidst all these tastings, I encountered some regular, good, and excellent whiskies, but I selected the best for this near-natural "top ten" leading up to my 1000th review. I must clarify that I'm not experiencing any placebo effect from sampling super expensive and incredibly rare drams, which is why I'm awarding them top scores. I like to think that even though I generally rate many of the single malts I taste highly (because I'm such a whisky enthusiast), I always strive for maximum objectivity. With all that said, it's now clear that this beauty receives a perfect score from me. This truly represents the pinnacle of what this distillery can achieve in a single cask, over 21 long years.
