Archie Rose Original Vodka

Aroma: Bright, clean with subtle yet distinct botanicals. Light citrus, green apple skins, a very delicate hint of raspberry, mint, coriander, and faint eucalyptus. The overall aroma has a floral character. Palate: A slightly sweet arrival with a mild white pepper kick. Yuzu and green apple emerge, with a touch of liquorice. The texture is creamy and silken. Finish: Medium to short. A mineral and light pepper finish leads to a clean, fresh aftertaste with just a whisper of citrus. I wasn't sure how to categorize this spirit. While simply called their “Original” vodka by Archie Rose, it clearly presents as a botanical spirit, not just unflavored vodka. Yet, it doesn't fit my definition of a “flavored” vodka either. The flavors aren't overpowering but rather a subtle and ethereal infusion of complex botanicals. My partner and I attended a gin-blending workshop yesterday (in spite of the scorching 41-degree Celsius heat in Sydney!). We sampled this vodka as part of a tasting after the event. When assessed on its own, it appears as a very delicately flavored vodka. However, when compared to several gins, and especially after experiencing some of their undiluted botanical extracts, it's evident that this is essentially Archie Rose’s Signature Gin made with a lighter hand and omitting the juniper (and likely the coriander and orris root as well). It's very refreshing and pairs well with tonic or soda water for a lighter long drink. For me, it's far more interesting sipped neat than any unflavored vodka I've tried. “Good”: 84/100 (3.75 stars)
