J.P. Wiser's Alumni Whisky Series Wendel Clark

This expression is a mix of double column and pot still distilled rye, aged for 11 years in former bourbon barrels. It's bottled at 41.6% ABV, referencing the Toronto area code where the namesake spent most of his career. Tasting Notes * Aroma (neat): rye spice, toffee, red apples, oak, vanilla * Taste (neat): rich and full, sweet toffee, clementine oranges, a hint of coconut followed by peppery cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon * Finish: medium length, with notes of Kraft soft caramels, chai tea, and a lingering taste of coconut macaroons. Adding water brings out more red apple in the aroma, increases the spice on the palate, and adds a pleasant hint of fresh cigar to the finish. I was hesitant to add water to a spirit bottled at 41.6% ABV, but it truly enhances it. Just a few drops are needed. It's delicious either way. Initially, I found it quite similar to a specific other rye, but it evolved with air exposure. That other rye offers a broader range of flavors and is generally more oak-forward, but this spirit is far more than just a marketing effort. It truly delivers. Highly recommended. Scored 88/100 points.

As a big admirer of rye, I keep a storage locker full of Dissertation, my top Canadian pick. Dissertation is also 11 years old and costs $65 a bottle, but it is no longer available. Wendel Clark is 11 years old and sells for $45 a bottle. Given the price difference, I find this to be an outstanding whisky. The distilling method and the casks employed have produced a delightful whisky that I intend to purchase for future enjoyment. Another success from the producer!

This is simply outstanding. Currently, it's my preferred rye, even surpassing Lot 40 on my list. The nose is rich with rye and caramel. There are complex layers I can barely comprehend. The taste is superb. Deep, rich, fruity, spicy, and floral. For $45, this is an easy purchase and one I'd readily make again.
