Review #061 Type: bourbon whisky Alcohol Content: 43% Notes: No Age Statement, made with unprocessed spring water from the Adirondack mountains Tasted after: first up Appearance (no score): Tawny color. Swirling shows a thick line that sticks to the glass, with legs forming rapidly. Nose: 14/20 Despite being a bourbon, the first scent I detect is rye, which (besides the name) suggests a significant amount was used in the mash bill. It's also sweet, with notes of apples, dates, and gingerbread. Palate: 28/40 Orange peel, almonds, baking spices, and a hint of vanilla. It's a bit stronger than I expected for the alcohol content but light overall; none of the flavors really stand out. Finish: 26/40 Medium-short finish. The rye noted on the nose becomes prominent here, along with dry oak tannins and a hint of orange marmalade, ending with a mildly bitter taste. With Water: A few drops of water make a big difference. The nose gains a buttery shortbread note. On the palate, the heat lessens slightly and brings out some sugary pastry flavors. The sweet and tangy orange marmalade on the finish is also enhanced, and these two elements complement each other very well. Total: 68/100 Final thoughts: This is the first high-rye bourbon I've tried. It's certainly drinkable, especially with a little water, but it's probably better suited for cocktails than for sipping straight. Price: gift Would recommend: no Would buy: no
