291 Small Batch Colorado Rye Whiskey

Small Batch Rye Whiskey 50.8% ABV, 101.7 proof, Batch 14: The initial aroma offers rich spiced pear and orange with wood shavings. It's pleasant. As the pour rests, hints of toasted wood emerge throughout. A brief note of spiced apricot gives way to more prominent scorched wood. The deep charred American white oak barrels and toasted Aspen wood staves are central. Savory notes and tannins quickly spread across the middle and back of my palate. The finish lingers with flavors of leather, wood, and tobacco, creating a bold impression. I wish the initial flavors had lasted longer instead of fading so quickly, but even as they depart, they do so with style. 7/10 Overall, the 291 Distillery bottles are worth exploring. They offer a distinct approach compared to more conventional American whiskeys. This is a welcome addition to the dynamic and ever-changing whiskey landscape. Did someone put a live pine tree in my tasty rye whiskey? It needs to breathe a little, but this might be a perfect, albeit pricey, Christmas whiskey for someone who longs for a Colorado winter.

I concur with several of the tasting notes, with the exception of a black licorice flavor that gently fades into a hint of smokiness. I appreciate the complexity imparted by the aspen staves to the whiskey.

Finished using Aspen Wood staves. The flavor is quite difficult to describe, yet it's enjoyable. It's fresh, somewhat fruity, and has a lingering presence.

Not overly spicy at first, finishes strong. Cherry, oak, and clove — a hint of citrus. Spicy finish. Really good.

Apricot on the nose. Pepper as spice on the palate and a nice medium bacon and Oak finish.
