291 Barrel Proof Straight Rye Whiskey (Batch 1)

Looking at my four bottles from a certain distillery, I'm unsure why I chose this one, but I picked the highest proof to start. Would you have made the same choice? Barrel Proof Rye 65.8% 131.7 proof, Barrel 667: While the proof initially made my nose twitch slightly, it doesn't have the overwhelming ethanol punch I was expecting. There's a woody yet refreshing musk that's different from typical oak scents (likely due to some aspen wood stave influence!). It brings to mind a rugged individual in a worn leather jacket striding confidently through a rainstorm. As it evolves, ginger and citrus add a syrupy touch to that cologne-inspired persona. Sipped neat, it goes down quickly and hot. I enjoy cask strength, but to give this whiskey its due, I added a few drops of water to my pour. It made a significant difference. Water slows down the flavor progression, allowing me to appreciate a burst of stewed fruit and a peak of savory pepper and oak. The finish is long as the spice fades, with notes of charred wood and a hint of petrol. I really enjoy the aroma of this one neat, but I strongly suggest trying it with a little water for consumption. 7.75/10 *Note: Each of these bottles was tasted separately with a fresh palate for each pour. I tried the 100 proof version since I couldn't find the non-barrel proof. It was good. Is it worth $80? I'm undecided.
