Glasgow 1770 The Original

Nose: Bubblegum and malt syrup. Grassy and woody, reminiscent of the sweet scent of decaying wood in a forest, without any mold or unpleasant odors. Light, splintery oak, crème brûlée, beeswax candles. This expression is maltier, significantly less fruity and sweet, and more subdued compared to the 2019 release. Palate: Gummy bears, a sweet creamy malt arrival full of preserved fruits (pear, apricot), abundant vanilla, clotted cream, and dark, almost tart, cherry. Spicy notes of cinnamon and white pepper emerge as it develops, along with flavors of white bread and creamy ale. The mouthfeel is full and satisfying. Finish: Medium/short. Sweet malt and fruity flavors that dissipate rather quickly, leaving a subtle aftertaste of ale and black tea. I recently sampled the 2019 release of this whisky, which felt like an unfinished product. With this "The Original" bottling, the distillery has established its core offering for the future, and in my view, they've succeeded. The earlier versions from Glasgow distillery were excessively heavy on banana, but they've reduced that and emphasized the malty, ale-like characteristics, which was an excellent decision. The whisky still carries a very confectionary-fruity profile and is a tad too sweet to be considered elegant, but it provides good, honest enjoyment, and if the distillery continues to refine their products, I predict they could become the next Arran in ten to twenty years. You heard it here first. Excellent value as an everyday or session whisky. "Above Average": 82/100 (3.25 stars)

(Virtual Tasting: Once Upon a Whisky – Glasgow Distillery, January 25, 2021). Nose: Vanilla, floral, banana, tropical fruit. Palate: The first taste is fiery and peppery. Floral, soapy, with fruit notes (pears & lemons). Hints of nuts and marzipan. Finish: Slightly bitter and numbing. A medium-long finish with notes of marmalade, spices, and oak/wood. This dram is a bit harsh but quite refreshing. It tied for third place among the five whiskies, receiving 5% of the total vote for the evening's favorite.

A bit light but enjoyable. Adding water diminished its quality.
