13th Colony Sour Mash Whiskey (2019)

Finally, a review for this very substantial, full-bodied Bourbon. It's not among the subtle, intricate bourbons available; instead, it's an assertive, 'I dare you to take another sip' kind of bourbon. This doesn't mean it's bad; it's quite good, but it is potent. The aroma is sweet vanilla with a light spice that carries into the body, where the full flavor erupts on your palate. I detected a sweetness akin to brown sugar or caramel, along with some of the alcohol's heat, but it's acceptable and expected. The website states it's a "wheated" bourbon, and it differs from any wheater I've previously encountered, though that's not a negative. This Bourbon makes an exceptional Old Fashioned, as its flavor significantly enhances the bitters and orange peel in my OF. Is it the best bourbon for the money? No. Does it demonstrate that not all wheated bourbons are smooth sippers? Yes. I suspect it would benefit from a few more years in the barrel, but it's very good for those needing a drink to unwind after a tough day. It's difficult to locate and costs around $40 per bottle, but in my estimation, it's worth trying. Enjoy.
