About this bottle

Part of the House of Suntory's 2022 Tsukuriwake Selection, this limited edition Yamazaki single malt is one of four releases highlighting the brand's core whisky-making elements. "Tsukuriwake," meaning "artisanship through a diversity of making," is represented here by single malts matured in oak sourced from Northern Spain, which the brand describes as Yamazaki's "depth enhancer." Introduced in Japan in 2020, this expression became available in select international markets, including the US, in June 2022.

Herschel Brunner 5.0

Nose: Intense barrel, cherry, raisins, dark fruit, aged! Palate: All the dark fruit: raisins, figs, fruitcake. Toffee, preserves. No Peat. Hints of bran & wort just emerging. Hints of wheat reach and warm ripe fruit peeking through. All the Musty, dank, waterlogged barrel you can handle. Oak, mahogany, walnut. Vanilla, fudge, crème brûlée sugar. Cinnamon, ginger, pepper spice. Butter & honey underneath.

This delivered precisely as anticipated from this bottling, meeting its lofty standards. It's a typical Yamazaki 18, matured in sherry wood. The balance is excellent, leading to a prolonged, pleasant spicy conclusion. While it brought no surprises, the execution is superb. I would purchase it at its suggested retail price, at most.

A sample of Spanish oak from the Yamazaki distillery, part of a 2025 flight featuring Yamazaki 12 year old components. It's a drinkable spirit, somewhat spicy but mild, and very enjoyable.
