After finishing my previous Japanese whiskey, I decided to shop for a new one. I'm currently on a bit of a phase. Plus, watching some excellent series filmed in or inspired by the culture has added to it. This particular selection caught my attention on the shelf. I've heard positive things about the Suntory distillery and wanted to try it. The aroma was quite appealing with its fruity pineapple and orange candy-like scent. Oak was also detected. The tasting notes were somewhat similar yet distinctly different. Fruit and sweetness, yes, but it came from cranberry and a touch of butter and oak. The finish was quite lasting, revealing cinnamon and hints of ginger. It's among the most complex whiskeys from this region I've encountered so far. Definitely worth the cost and made watching Shogun even more enjoyable.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Yamazaki Distillery's founding in 1923, The House of Suntory has issued a special edition of its well-known Yamazaki 12 Year. The packaging is inspired by "Monozukuri," a Japanese concept signifying superior craftsmanship. This bottling is part of a series of whiskies being released in 2023 to mark the centennial. Yamazaki 12 Year 100th Anniversary, bottled at 43% ABV, is available in select markets within the US, UK, Europe, and Asia starting in May 2023. The suggested retail price is $185.

This whiskey was a big letdown. For what it cost, I definitely thought it would be better. It wasn't very smooth, complex, or oily.
Very mellow, not intense. Deep caramel notes, really pleasant. Satisfying end.
