Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Double Double Oaked 2020

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is arguably one of the finest readily available low-proof bourbons. But does the Double Double Oaked justify spending $50 for a 375ml bottle? I can definitively say I've encountered a batch that was worth it. But the 2020 release? Nose - Immediately, notes of smoked oak and spice emerge. It's reserved and subdued, with hints of what I'd describe as "just added water to my bourbon." Deeper exploration reveals prominent oak notes, as if you're in a slightly burned/charred oak room months after a fire. Surprisingly, the sweetness I associate with Woodford Double Oaked – the vanilla, butterscotch, caramel, and chocolate, and frankly, that "perfect for pancakes" flavor profile – is somewhat muted. The oak, however, doesn't dominate; it's simply the most noticeable characteristic. Nevertheless, the general profile of Woodford is still present, just less sweet and more neutral. It's a pleasant variation on Woodford, offering more depth and refinement than the standard bottling. Taste - This is where the double oaked character shines. Classic Woodford throughout, with a heavy char rather than just oak, in my opinion. There's a fruity note I can't quite identify. Spicy elements and a taste reminiscent of a burned Danish or croissant with rich cream and chocolate. Mouthfeel - Extremely thin, like water. While there's ample nice spice, the lack of body is quite disappointing. Finish - Surprisingly longer and more impressive than anticipated. However, there's little to add that wasn't covered in the taste description. At cask strength, even at 48-50% ABV, this would score quite well, but it ultimately requires more sweetness, richness, and proof. Rating: 1.75 out of 5. Decent, but not exceptional. I'm uncertain if I'll purchase it again, though I have enjoyed some truly excellent Double Double Oaked expressions.

This expression is visibly darker than the other bourbons I have on my shelf. Aroma: butterscotch and maple syrup Palate: figs, maple syrup, cherry (prominent the first time I tried it), smoke from the barrel Finish: tobacco, oaky, a pleasant warm lingering mouthfeel I share the sentiment of others. It's an interesting bourbon to sample and offers distinct flavors compared to what's commonly available; however, $50 for a 375 mL bottle is quite high.

Quite enjoyable. The aroma is packed with candy notes. The palate features cotton candy, caramel, oak, tobacco, and a slight spice. The finish is medium and sweet, with a bit of bitterness appearing late on the palate, which is a drawback. Otherwise, it's excellent.

Vegetal, savory aroma. I can't pinpoint specific notes, but it's pleasant. Buttery palate, with abundant honey and a hint of butterscotch on the finish. A truly comforting drink.

I'm certain this carries a hefty price tag. I spent $25 for a serving at a restaurant in Louisville. Notes of leather, smoke, wood, chocolate, and a smooth finish. Considerably superior to Woodford DO.

Released in 2021. This was exceptionally well-crafted. Sweetness, char, and a pleasant body.
