Nose- Sweet butter and berry jam spread generously on toasted wheat bread. Add an oaky foundation and a hint of mint, and you have the remarkable aroma of WLW 2023. For me, this is one of the year's best noses, rivaling expressions like 4R LE, GTS, WT Voyages, C913, Maker's Cellar Aged, and other contenders. The aroma is incredibly prominent. Palate- Led by vanilla bean and, for me, almost a strawberry jam. The oak is prominent but not overpowering; it's showcased. After an initial burst of heat, the flavors meld into a milk chocolate center. Finish- Milk chocolate and caramel nougat dominate the finish, with just enough barrel influence at the end to signify seriously aged bourbon. Overall- What happens when you combine one of the market's finest wheated bourbons with high proof and quality aging? You get WLW 2023! It's astonishing how, at 133.6 proof, I experience sufficient warmth to identify it as bourbon, yet it's nowhere near the intensity I'd expect at that alcohol level. This is truly one of the best WLWs I've had.

It is named after William Larue Weller, who is recognized for pioneering the use of wheat instead of rye as the secondary grain in bourbon production. This Fall 2023 release was distilled in the spring of 2011 and aged in Warehouses C, L, M, and N. Bottled at 133.6 proof, it became available in early October 2023 through select retailers with a suggested price of $124.99.

I'm quite surprised by this pour tonight. I've had it open for a couple of weeks after trying it fresh. The aroma is still quite potent, with a lot of ethanol initially, but more nuances emerge this time. It's very fruity with some sweetness, vanilla, and floral notes. The palate was dominated by fresh red fruits, akin to a strawberry or raspberry cobbler. There's a touch of floral character, balanced by sweetness and oak. A slight burn occurs towards the end of the palate. The long finish builds nicely. Overall: I believe this will continue to evolve with more time. I have to reduce the score slightly due to its heat. I plan to experiment with a few drops of water to see if that helps. I enjoy the flavor profile and the finish of this drink. For comparison, the GTS '22 was clearly superior when tasted side-by-side.
Smells like caramel and sweet cherry. Taste is caramel and a spicy rye ending. Medium to heavy mouthfeel. Amazing!
